Former Arsenal & Chelsea Stars & Two Champions League Winners Among Players Signed Up For Indian Super League

Football in India gets serious this year as the inaugural Indian Super League kicks off.

Eight franchises will compete in the tournament, which will run from October 12 to December 20.

Some big names have already signed up, including former Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea stars.

10. Josemi – Atletico de Kolkata

Quickly forgotten by Liverpool fans after two seasons at Anfield, but he was a unused substitute in the 2005 Champions League final.

9. Bernard Mendy – Chennai

A four-time France international who had Premier League spells with Bolton Wanderers and Hull City.

8. Joan Capdevila – NorthEast United

Picked up 60 senior caps for Spain, winning Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

7. David James – Kerala Blasters

The 44-year-old former Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Manchester City and Portsmouth goalkeeper will be player manager of the Kerala Blasters.

6. Robert Pires – FC Goa

Midfielder Pires, now 40, was a member of Arsenal’s invincible Premier League title-winning team of 2004.

5. David Trezeguet – FC Pune City

The 36-year-old ex Juventus and Monaco forward will fancy his chances of being the Indian Super League’s top goalscorer. He netted 34 goals in 71 senior internationals for France, helping Les Bleus win the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

4. Luis Garcia – Atletico de Kolkata

Played a starring role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005, earning himself a place in the UEFA Team of the Year.

3. Freddie Ljungberg – Mumbai City FC

Won two Premier Leagues and three FA Cups with Arsenal. Freddie was the Premier League’s Player of the Season in 2002.

2. Nicolas Anelka – Mumbai City FC

Never settled, but Anelka has one hell of a CV, having played for PSG, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Man City, Chelsea and Juventus.

1. Alessandro del Piero – Delhi Dynamos

A true legend of his era, the 39-year-old, who played 91 times for Italy, won the 2006 World Cup, as well as eight Serie A titles with Juventus, two of which were later revoked.
