Two Arsenal XIs Arsene Wenger Can Field In 2014/15: Strength In Depth?

We try to make two ‘working’ quality XIs out of players available to Emirates Stadium boss Arsene Wenger, it’s not easy.

Though Arsene Wenger did spent upwards of £80m on new additions over the summer there are some who argue, with good reason, that the Arsenal squad still lacks strength in depth in a number of areas.

As if to test this claim we have looked to field two line-ups that the north London side could put together with members in their Emirates Stadium squad for 2014/15.

Arsenal First XI

Wojciech Szcz?sny

Polish keeper gets the nod comfortably ahead of new signing David Ospina

Mathieu Debuchy

New signing takes his spot at right-back, an area that has diminished since the exits of both Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson to Man City and West Ham respectively, albeit the England youngster has only moved on a loan deal.

Per Mertesacker

German sits in the centre of defence after a steady 18 months for club and country

Laurent Koscielny

Rock solid centre-back firmly in the first XI

Kieran Gibbs

Still suffers with consistent injury concerns but gets into our starting eleven.

Mikel Arteta

Veteran skipper offers consistency in a holding midfield role

Aaron Ramsey

Welshman has been in outstanding form over the past year and is one of the first names on our starting eleven team-sheet

Mesut Ozil

We play the German in a supporting striker role behind a three man attack.

Alexis Sanchez

Chilean will play out wide in our attack

Olivier Giroud

Frenchman has plenty of detractors but is the spearhead of our front three

Danny Welbeck

Former Man United man can play out wide and will do so in our very attacking formation.

Second XI

David Ospina

Colombian keeper impressed at the World Cup finals and will certainly fight for a starting spot.

Mathieu Flamini

We have to use the Frenchman as part of a three man defence, the former AC Milan man having been used in the role in the past.

Calum Chambers

The teenager will sit in the centre of our somewhat makeshift defence.

Nacho Monreal

Though usually used at left-back the Spaniard has played at centre-back for Arsenal and didn’t look out of place.

Jack Wilshere

Such has been his drop in form the England man now sits in Arsenal’s second eleven.

Abou Diaby

Perennially injured we look to the Frenchman to provide bite in a defensive midfield role.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The youngster has been used in a central attacking midfield role before and it’s in this slot we place the England international.

Joel Campbell

The Costa Rican sits in the hole behind our striker in this second XI.

Santi Cazorla

After an average second season at the club we play the Spaniard out wide in our reserve side.

Lukas Podolski

We prefer the German in our central forward role ahead of Yaya Sanogo…but only just.

Theo Walcott

Still out injured and still to reach his full potential the England attacker sits out wide in forward line.
