BBC radio show 606 has given listeners a chance to vote for the five English players since the birth of the national side who would start in an ultimate England five-a-side team!

Here’s who made the cut…

GK) Gordon Banks

England’s most famous ever goalkeeper, and the first of three players who started in the 1966 World Cup final victory. Banks won 73 caps for England, and is most famous for his wonder save from Pele against Brazil in the 1970 World Cup.

Defence) Bobby Moore

Obviously, the captain of the 1966 World Cup winners makes the side. Moore was regarded as the best central defender in the world during his heyday, winning 108 caps, and earning a place in the Greatest XI of the 20th Century, voted for in 1998.

Midfield) Paul Scholes

Scholes was a phenomenal player for Manchester United, but he arguably never got the chance to reach the same level with his country. Despite many believing him to be the most talented English player of his generation, Scholes only amassed 66 caps, and was often asked to play on the left wing.

Midfield) Bobby Charlton

The legendary midfield dynamo scored a jaw-dropping 49 goals in 106 international appearances for the Three Lions, and is probably regarded as England’s greatest ever player. He won the Ballon D’or in 1966, too.

Forward) Gary Lineker

The much loved TV Math of the Day presenter was also a seriously good footballer. Prolific for Tottenham, Everton, Barcelona and Leicester City, Lineker also bagged 48 goals for his country, one less than Charlton, the all-time top scorer.
