The Seven Manchester United Youth Products That Van Gaal Has Allowed To Leave This Summer Including New Arsenal Signing

The players who have come through the academy to be sold or loaned out.

Manchester United have a long and proud tradition of promoting players from the academy and giving them a chance to earn a place in the first team.

Most famously their so-called ‘Class of ’92’ played a key part in the treble winning season of 1999, but many fear that policy has been axed by new manager Louis van Gaal.

This summer the Dutchman has spent over £150m on new players, whilst no fewer than seven academy players have been allowed to leave Old Trafford.

Here are those deemed not good enough by van Gaal.

Federico Macheda

Having broken onto the scene with a superb goal against Aston Villa in 2009, the Italian then had six loan spells with five different clubs and only ever managed 36 appearances for the Red Devils.

Macheda left for Cardiff City this summer with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer using his connections to land the 23-year-old.

Jack Barmby

Yet to even make his full debut for United this 19-year-old has been acquired by Leicester City, although looks some way from their first team as well.

It’s difficult to tell whether the winger will cut it or not at the top, but playing in the Under-21s at the King Power Stadium is hardly inspiring.

Louis Rowley

It’s a similar story for this fellow teenager, who has also joined the Leicester Under-21s and is looking to make an impression in Nigel Pearson’s first team.

Rowley is a centre-back who made just nine appearances for the Under-21s during his time at the Theatre of Dreams.

Danny Welbeck

The departure that disappointed fans the most as Welbeck was considered to be one of the few youth products genuinely good enough for first team action.

The 23-year-old is an established England international and many think the forward will flourish under the guidance of new boss Arsene Wenger.

Michael Keane

Has been given a couple of opportunities already by van Gaal – including a woeful performance against MK Dons in the Capital One Cup – and will now be looking to get further experience with Burnley.

Keane has joined the Clarets on-loan and will need to do a whole lot more to show he is ready for the Red Devils.

Tom Lawrence

Another who has left for the Foxes now, although after getting his opportunity in the United first team last term could well be featuring on a more regular basis than Barmby and Rowley.

Lawrence made his one and only appearance for the 13-time Premier League champions against Hull City towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

Tom Cleverley

Someone who has become a bit of a laughing stock in recent times, but who many are now sad to see go as it hinders the club’s reputation as a place for young talent to thrive.

Cleverley may have only joined Aston Villa on-loan, but with there being a view to a permanent deal it’s unlikely the midfielder will ever return.
