So in anticipation of the return of the English top flight here are the 10 statistically best players in the division so far this term according to our friends at WhoScored.

10. Raheem Sterling, Liverpool – score: 7.86

The past 12 months have seen this 19-year-old develop from a promising youngster into stalwart for club and country and with two goals and an assist already this term he doesn’t look to be letting up anytime soon either.

9. Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton – score: 7.90

There was a lot of speculation concerning the future of this Saints midfielder over the summer, but none of that seems to have affected the France international who has been in fine form and even scored two goals to boot.

8. Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea City – score: 7.93

Only two teams have a 100% record in the league so far this campaign and one of them is the Swans, with Sigurdsson returning to the Liberty Stadium in the summer from Tottenham Hotspur and has provided an impressive four assists already.

7. Gael Clichy, Manchester City – score: 7.99

To many peoples’ surprise the former Arsenal man started at right-back in the Citizens’ opening game with Newcastle United, but impressed both there and at left-back against Liverpool and may be recalled after City’s shock defeat to Stoke City in their last outing.

6. Phil Jones, Manchester United – score: 8.02

Things may not be going as well for the Red Devils as new manager Louis van Gaal would have hoped with the side still yet to record their first win, but in a 3-5-2 formation Jones is thriving in his preferred central defensive role.

5. Branislav Ivanovic, Chelsea – score: 8.06

Many picked the Blues as their favourites for the title ahead of the new season and they are being justified with their prediction at this early stage with Jose Mourinho’s men flying high and right-back Ivanovic having already scored two goals.

4. Eden Hazard, Chelsea – score: 8.13

Was named PFA Young Player of the Year last season, has been included in both teams of the year since arriving from Lille in 2012 and just looks set to keep improving in English football as Hazard’s quest for Ballon d’Or glory continues.

3. Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea – score: 8.14

After three years with his boyhood club FC Barcelona this former Gunners captain returned to England in the summer and has made an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge with four assists to his name already.

2. Ryan Shawcross, Stoke City – score: 8.18

A somewhat surprising inclusion near the top of the list, but the Potters skipper was in superb form as his side beat City at the Etihad Stadium and Mark Hughes’ team have conceded just two goals in three outings.

1. Diego Costa, Chelsea – score: 8.40

Yet top of the pile is another new signing for the West Londoners and a striker who has immediately taken to English football following a £32m switch from Atletico Madrid, scoring an impressive four goals in three games so far.
