The best of the best in the English top tier.
The excitement is brewing once more as the 2014/15 Premier League season returns this weekend following the international break and in anticipation here are the top 10 best full-backs in the division from CaughtOffside.
10. Alberto Moreno, Liverpool
Sneaking in at No.10 is the 22-year-old that the Reds paid Sevilla £12m for over the summer and Moreno looks to have adapted immediately to Brendan Rodgers’ style of play.
9. Nathaniel Clyne, Southampton
There has been a mass exodus from St Mary’s this summer and Clyne has watched three fellow defenders leave for huge transfer fees, but don’t be surprised if the 23-year-old is the future right-back for England.
8. Filipe Luis, Chelsea
Although is yet to start a game for his new club following a £15.8m move from Atletico Madrid, those who saw the Brazilian at the Vicente Calderon Stadium over the past few years knows what he’s capable of.
7. Luke Shaw, Manchester United
Named in the PFA Team of the Year last term still aged just 18-years-old and has since been signed from the Saints for a whopping £27m, making Shaw the most expensive teenager in British history.
6. Seamus Coleman, Everton
On the other side of the back four Coleman was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2013/14 as the Irishman provided a mix of attacking prowess and defensive nous perfectly.
5. Mathieu Debuchy, Arsenal
When Arsene Wenger watched Bacary Sagna leave for Manchester City on a free transfer in the summer he immediately went and replaced him with another, better, France international.
4. Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea
The player who appears to have benefited the most from Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge as manager in 2013 is this Spaniard, who looks adept at both right and left-back.
3. Leighton Baines, Everton
Has fallen slightly down out list in recent times as not too long ago Baines would have been the undisputed No.1, but despite his drop the 29-year-old is still a hugely useful asset.
2. Branislav Ivanovic, Chelsea
When the Serbian first joined the Blues he was naturally a central defender and has since had to adapt to being a full-back, which means unlike so many others he does not neglect his duties at the back.
1. Pablo Zabaleta, Manchester City
Yet top of the pile is a player who is something of an unsung hero as Zabaleta has been ever present in the Citizens XI during their boom period of success.
