Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a sensational £60m return to Old Trafford next summer, while other marquee additions could also come in during the January transfer window, giving the team a potentially very new feel to it in the near future.

See below for a run-through of a possible lineup that could be taking the field for United next season:

Goalkeeper and defence:

With signings still needed in defence more than anywhere else, it seems likely that United will step up their interest in Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels. The German international, valued at around £20m, has been on the Red Devils’ radar for some time now, and will surely be set for a move to a bigger club at some point, lining up alongside Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones in van Gaal’s back three.

Midfield:

Assuming van Gaal sticks with his current formation, using a five-man midfield, there could be as many as three new arrivals to join this summer’s signings of Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera. On the right-hand side, Cristiano Ronaldo would be a welcome return to the club after five years with Real Madrid, while Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and AS Roma playmaker Kevin Strootman are also still top targets after United missed out on them both in this year’s transfer window. These three players could cost around £130m in total, and would likely be funded by the sales of the likes of Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini, who could still bring in decent transfer fees amid interest from Juventus and Napoli, respectively.

Attack:

In attack, van Gaal will be hoping to continue to partner Radamel Falcao with Wayne Rooney as United will surely work on a deal to sign the Colombian goal machine permanently after his loan deal expires at the end of this season. With the likes of Ronaldo and Di Maria behind him, the former AS Monaco man will surely shine in the Premier League in this truly jaw-dropping starting lineup.
