He has been in fine form since the start of the campaign, feeding off the superb service provided to him by fellow new signing Cesc Fabregas.

But where does he rank amongst other Chelsea strikers in recent years?

Here are a few other Chelsea hitmen along with the number of games it took them to reach the seven goal tally.

Fernando Torres – 43 games

It’s no secret that Fernando Torres had a dreadful start to his Chelsea career, and in all honestly it never really got much better for the Spaniard. So it’s no surprise to see that Torres took more than ten times the number of games to equal Costa’s current record. With just 20 league goals in 110 appearances for Chelsea, Fernando was never going to come anywhere near.

Andriy Shevchenko – 41 games

Seen as a typical impulsive Roman Abramovic buy, Shevchenko was another player that never really got going at Chelsea. He was at the club from 2006-2009, but spent a year loaned out to AC Milan making just 48 league appearances for Chelsea. In this time he helped himself to just nine goals, scoring seven in a disappointing 41 games; not much better than Fernando Torres.

Didier Drogba – 18 games

A legend and an icon at Stamford Bridge, Drogba is loved by all the Chelsea faithful. With an impressive record of nearly a goal a game, Drogba scored 100 league goals in just over 200 appearances for the Blues. Costa will have to go some way to beat that record, but even the Ivorian didn’t get off to the flying start that Diego has. Taking more than four times the games, Drogba scored seven goals in an acceptable 18 games.

Diego Costa – 4 games

An astonishing feat, Costa truly is in the goalscoring form of his life. If he can continue in this vein of form he is sure to finish the season as the Premier League’s top scorer, possibly helping Chelsea to yet another league title at the same time.

Is Costa able to keep up this impressive run of scoring in every game? And if so will he guide Chelsea to the title?
