The Kansas City Chiefs are nursing some significant injuries to defensive players as they head to Denver to face Peyton Manning and the Broncos on Sunday.

Kansas City lost both linebacker Derrick Johnson and tackle Mike DeVito to ruptured Achilles tendons in last week’s season-opening 26-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and as a result they have been forced into some very early roster moves to cover the loss.

Coach Andy Reid has tried to focus his players on the game this week and avoid panic setting in after a difficult start to the campaign, but things aren’t likely to get any easier when they face the Broncos on the road.

Stopping Manning is difficult enough with your first choice defensive unit, but after the veteran quarterback made a blistering start to the season last weekend, he also has history of dismantling the Chiefs.

Manning threw for 323 yards and a touchdown in a 27-17 victory on November 17 last year when the Chiefs were still unbeaten after a great start to the year, and he had 403 yards and five touchdowns in a 35-28 win on December 1.

He has won all four meetings with the Chiefs since joining the Broncos but insisted this week that it will still be a difficult proposition with Andy Smith and Jamaal Charles likely to provide the biggest threats on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Broncos will also look to get second-year back Monte Ball more involved after he enjoyed great success against the Chiefs last season, while tight end Julius Thomas will undoubtedly be keen to add to his three touchdowns from last weekend.

It looks a daunting task for Kansas City this weekend, and it could well be another routine victory for Manning and Co. as they eye an immediate return to the Super Bowl.
