The Reds look in transition after losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer, while the club’s summer signings have not yet settled and made the desired impact at Anfield, with the team suffering two defeats in their opening four games.

Aston Villa won 1-0 at Anfield this weekend, while Rodgers’ side were also well beaten at Manchester City in August, and the Merseyside giants are now ready to enter the transfer market again to strengthen in the defensive areas in particular.

The club’s three main targets are as follows:

3) Inigo Martinez (Real Sociedad)

Liverpool are in clear need of signings in central defence after some unconvincing displays from the likes of Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho so far, and could revive their interest in one-time target Inigo Martinez. The 23-year-old has been a highly impressive performer for Real Sociedad in recent times and could be available for around £16m this January. The likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid have looked at him in the past, and he certainly looks like having the calibre to come in and help the Reds tighten up at the back.

2) William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon)

In defensive midfield, Liverpool are ready to enter the running to sign Sporting Lisobon star and Arsenal target William Carvalho. The Portuguese international has looked like one of the best young players in Europe in recent times and this has seen plenty of top clubs show an interest in him. Chelsea and Manchester United are also believed to be keeping an eye on his situation, but Liverpool will hope to sign him for around £24m ahead of their rivals, with Rodgers in need of a more commanding midfield partner to play alongside Steven Gerrard and protect the back four.

1) Jay Rodriguez (Southampton)

Linked with Liverpool before, Jay Rodriguez is back on the club’s radar this January after a slow start from summer signing Mario Balotelli. The England international was in superb form for Southampton before picking up an injury towards the end of last season, and could be the fourth player signed from the Saints by Liverpool this season, following the likes of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren from the St Mary’s Stadium to Anfield.
