Elsewhere, the Gunners are also said to be keeping tabs on Manchester City pair James Milner and Matija Nastasic, who could join in a double raid on their Premier League title rivals.

However, some player departures could also be in store, leading to a rather different-looking XI that Arsenal could field in the second half of the season.

See below for a run-through of how Arsenal’s lineup could look when changes are made in the next transfer window:

Goalkeeper and defence:

After being linked with Arsenal several times in the summer, it seems likely that recent defensive performances will persuade the Gunners to move for Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic. The Serbian international is a promising young player in need of a move to play regular first-team football, and he could make a fine alternative to Per Mertesacker in Arsene Wenger’s back four. The north London giants will also be delighted to welcome back Mathieu Debuchy and Kieran Gibbs from injury by then.

Midfield:

With signings also needed in defensive midfield to help shield the defence, recent reports suggest that Arsenal are making progress on a deal to sign William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon when the transfer window re-opens in January. The Portuguese international could form a fine midfield partnership with Jack Wilshere as part of the central two, and make a great long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta.

Attack:

With Mesut Ozil being linked with a £32m move to Bayern Munich after struggling to settle at Arsenal, and Lukas Podolski also possibly set to move after failing to break into the starting lineup on a regular basis, Arsenal’s attacking midfield could look quite different at the turn of the year, with James Milner thought to be a target set to come in from Manchester City, and with Alexis Sanchez perhaps moving to the left-hand side to accommodate the England international, who can also fill in a number of other roles in midfield and even right-back.
