The Spanish giants are favourites to win back the trophy for the 11th time while Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester City are also in the top six.

The projections come from Bloomburg Sports’ match analysis, which predicts how a side will perform by comparing a clubs recent and historic Champions League campaigns while also taking into account teams transfer spending and group stage draw.

So according to Bloomberg’s calculations, here are the top six favourites for this year’s Champions League.

6. Paris St Germain – 5.28%

Quite rightly, Bloombery believe that PSG will lead France’s challenge for the Champions League. The French champions main summer business was buying defender David Luiz for £40 million but apart from that, Laurent Blanc hasn’t strengthened all that much. The PSG hierarchy will hope that the team can improve on last year’s quarter final finish.

5. Manchester City – 6.70%

The Sky Blues are one of two English teams in the top six. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are the strongest they’ve ever been and this year represents their best chance of winning Europe’s biggest prize. However, in order to do that they will have to navigate a tough group which Bloomberg suggests they only have a 68.62% chance of qualifying from.

4. Chelsea – 11.87%

The Blues are the most likely English club to win the giant trophy this year, most probably because of their excellent business during the transfer window. Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas have come into Chelsea’s side and made an immediate impact in the Premier League, meaning they should bring that form into Europe as well. Unlike Manchester City, Jose Mourinho’s men have a much bigger chance of qualifying from their group with Bloomburg giving them a 93.66% chance.

3. Barcelona – 15.51%

The Spanish power houses will always be in with a shout of winning the Champions League and this year is no exception. With Luis Suarez on board and several other new arrivals, the Catalan club are in a much better position to be victorious than they were last season. They should also make it through the group stages easily with Bloomburg giving them a 95% chance of qualifying.

2. Bayern Munich – 16.69%

The German giants have been one of the top teams in Europe over the past few seasons and that is reflected in Bloomburg’s rating. Polish forward Robert Lewandowski has joined them this year, giving them a more physical presence up front meaning they should be even more dangerous in the final third. Due to the presence of Manchester City in their group, Bayern have an 85.34% chance of qualifying from their group.

1. Real Madrid – 19.03%

Last year’s champions are favourites to do it again this year despite a poor start to the season. Los Blancos have lost three out of their last four games and are already six points behind Barcelona in the La Liga table. However, Bloomburg obviously thinks the signings of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos will help Real lift the trophy again. Bloomburg are also very confident that the Spanish giants will qualify from their group, giving them a huge 99.58% chance.
