The 23 year old is set to become the highest paid player in the club’s history with the Blues offering him a £200,000 a week deal plus performance related bonuses.

Ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League tie with Schalke, Mourinho revealed that Hazard was close to agreeing a new deal and also backed the Belgian to become one of the best players in world football.

”[Hazard] means a lot because he is a fantasic player and day by day we are feeling his motivation to work hard and improve, so we have big hopes that he will go from a top player that he is at the moment to reach higher levels and become one of the best,” Mourinho said when asked about the Belgian star.

”Obviously he’s a player that we want to keep, and, in spite of him still having a long-term contract, as young as he is it’s true that Chelsea is trying to have an agreement for a new contract.”

The former Lille star had been linked with a return to France during the summer with Paris St Germain thought to be interested in his signature.

However, speculation died down once it was revealed that Hazard wanted to remain at Stamford Bridge.
