Dropping Mesut Ozil: How Arsenal Must Line Up Without The Hapless German & The Immobile Mikel Arteta

He might be known as one of the best playmakers in world football, but the truth is that Mesut Ozil has been nothing short of atrocious in an Arsenal start this season.

Versus Borussia Dortmund, Ozil was at his very worst, contributing nothing while left hovering out on the left.

This term he’s registered no goals, no assists – and outrageously (according to WhoScored) he hasn’t played a single through-ball all season…

It’s time for Arsene Wenger to pull him, and his static skipper Mikel Arteta out of the starting XI…

Here’s the side he should consider starting.

GK) Wojciech Szczesny

Still deserves the no.1 spot, although David Ospina is surely breathing down his neck.

DR) Calum Chambers

Will return to action once he recovers from tonsillitis.

DL) Kieran Gibbs

Fit and healthy once again, although he’ll need to improve defensively on his poor performance against Borussia Dortmund.

DC) Per Mertesacker

With no backup centre-back around with Chambers at right-back, Arsene Wenger has little choice but to start Mertesacker and Koscielny.

DC) Laurent Koscielny

The Frenchman was dreadful against the Germans, but Arsenal fans will remain faithful to their best defender.

DMC) Mathieu Flamini

Mikel Arteta is a better footballer than Flamini, but his immobility and lack of defensive work-rate is costing them dearly. Flamini runs, tackles and provides a combative presence, and until January, when Arsenal can sign a top defensive anchorman, the Frenchman provides the needed industry at the base of midfield.

MC) Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal’s best player, and probably the first name on the team-sheet.

MC) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The young Englishman has bite, and the technical ability to play in the centre, where he did exceptionally against Bayern Munich last season in the Champions League. With Jack Wilshere injured, he should be given the chance in a midfield three.

AMR) Alexis Sanchez

Pace, goals and class. The £35m Chilean is capable of providing Arsenal with all three.

AML) Santi Cazorla

At this moment in time, the Spanish playmaker is more deserving of a starting role than Ozil. He isn’t playing brilliantly either, but his end product is better than Ozil’s.

FC) Danny Welbeck

With Olivier Giroud injured, and Yaya Sanogo very average, Welbeck needs to start finishing his chances.
