Here are five players Arsenal need to sign to in order to compete with Europe’s best clubs.

1. Sami Khedira

The main thing Arsenal were crying out for against Dortmund was a defensive midfielder. Wenger’s side had no control over the game and the German side’s attackers could run at the Gunners defence almost at will. A player like Sami Khedira would solve both of those problems. He is capable of protecting a team’s back four and also has a good range of passing which means he is able to control a game. Arsenal need a calm head in midfield and Khedira is certainly that.

2. William Carvalho

The Sporting Lisbon youngster is a highly recommended defensive midfielder with plenty of energy and character. He could patrol the Gunners midfield and stop attackers while letting more creative players like Jack Wilshere focus on attacking. The Portuguese midfielder may appeal to Wenger more than Khedira as he is young, so the Frenchman could mould him into a great player like he did with Viera, Henry and Fabregas. Carvalho won’t come cheap with Sporting set to demand at least £20 million but the Gunners need to sign a quality player to solve their midfield problem.

3. Mats Hummels

Arguably, Hummels is the best defender in the world at the moment. He is strong, powerful and most importantly, he can take charge of a defensive situation. That is something that Arsenal desperately need, especially after Tuesday’s performance. Wenger’s defence looked like they didn’t know what to do when Dortmund were putting them under pressure. That is when a player like Hummels could use his calm head and take charge of the situation. Again, the German international wouldn’t come cheap but to get the best the Gunners will need to spend some money.

4. Karim Benzema

Arsenal did spend £16 million on a striker this summer. However, Danny Welbeck has never been a proven goalscorer and his first two appearances in a Gunners shirt tells you why. The England international isn’t a particularly good finisher and it is doubtful he will ever be. Wenger needs to add a top quality goalscorer to his side and their aren’t many better than Benzema. The Frenchman is capable of scoring all types of goals, from tap ins to 25 yard screamers.  Whether Arsenal would be able to sign the Real Madrid man is another question but their is no doubt Benzema would add an attacking threat that the Gunners currently don’t have.

5. Marco Reus

A side can never have enough quality attacking players and although Arsenal have the likes of Alex-Oxlade Chamberlin, signing Marco Reus would really add class to the Gunners squad. The German is one of the most skillful players in the world and he has the ability to cause even the best defenders problems. He maybe available within the next year as well however, Wenger’s side will have to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United for his signature, meaning the Gunners may have to pay over the odds if they are to land Reus, something Wenger very rarely does.
