The Atlanta Falcons host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Georgia Dome for Thursday Night Football as they hope to improve to 2-1 for the season.
The Falcons haven’t been particularly convincing so far, allowing more yards than any other team in the league while they also remain the only team not to register a sack in the NFL.
Coach Mike Smith’s team allowed 472 yards for the second straight game in Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, but they will be hoping to be more dominant against an injury-hit Buccaneers team.
Smith wants to see his defensive unit put more pressure on the opposition quarterback, and that could spell trouble for Josh McCown if the team responds.
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay are off to a 0-2 start to the new season and first-year coach Lovie Smith has significant problems to contend with as he looks to overcome injury blows and general poor play on both sides of the ball.
McCown is guiding a unit that is averaging 168.5 passing yards but he’s thrown three interceptions, while Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and middle linebacker Mason Foster are unlikely to play this week.
The two teams split their matchups last year, with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan 5-1 as a starter against Tampa Bay at home, throwing for seven touchdowns, no interceptions and two sacks in the last four meetings.
Whether or not his success against the Bucs continues remains to be seen, but with such a short turnaround for both teams this week, they will be fully focused on the task in hand and will hope to have regained their energy and determination to provide their fans with a big boost ahead of the weekend schedule.
