5. Andre Ayew – Marseille

After a strong showing at the World Cup this summer, the Ghanaian found himself as one of the more intriguing propositions during the transfer window. Hull seemed to be leading the charge for his signature, but on transfer deadline day he turned them down to stay on the south coast of France.

However, it has since emerged that United are one of the favourites to snap him up in the new year with Louis Van Gaal keen to add more width to his team as he prepares to reinstall them at the top of the Premier League pyramid. Having bagged 49 goals and 16 assists for the French giants, he would certainly add another dimension to the club’s already attack mixed set up.

4. Kevin Strootman – Roma

The combative midfielder was tipped to head to Old Trafford over the summer but thanks to his injury it meant the deal stalled. However, United are still keen on bringing the Dutchman to the Premier League and providing his recovery remains on track to link up with his compatriot Louis Van Gaal.

Roma won’t want to let him go on the cheap, though, and a £25m fee has been mooted, which United should not even blink at given the amount they’ve spent over the past two months.

3. Arturo Vidal – Juventus

The Chilean’s move to Old Trafford seemed to be a nailed on certainty over the summer and it was only a matter of time before the deal went ahead. One thing led to another, though, and the midfield maestro ended up staying with the defending Serie A champions.

However, the Metro have been reported as saying that the deal will still go ahead in January thanks to United’s massive windfall in the face of such heavy spending, and should United’s midfield not maintain a similar level of consistency that they showed against QPR last weekend then the 27-year-old will be the first port of call.

2. Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund

Throughout the club’s recruitment drive in the transfer window fans were calling for Van Gaal to recognise the club’s massive defensive frailties by bringing in a player capable of pulling everyone together. Marcos Rojo was brought in, and Daley Blind can also feature at the back, but the club still look short in that area.

But the Express believe that when the transfer window re-opens Hummels will become United’s ‘Galacticos’ signing, but that will all depend on how their back line holds up from now until the new year.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid

Rumour has it that Ronaldo is fed up with life in Madrid and will seek a dramatic return to the club he so loves in the new year. His agent is already said to be working on a move to get him back to England after falling out with the Madrid board, meaning that the deal could well be complete before the end of the campaign.

It’s claimed that he is already working hard on a package to take the player back to United, with a £55million fee being mentioned, and though it would be a complicated transfer it would be worth just for the feel good factor alone.
