The 25-year-old was a £42.5m signing from Real Madrid last summer, arriving at the Emirates Stadium to be met with great excitement as the club smashed their transfer record to bring him to north London.

However, Ozil has looked poor this season in an unfamiliar role on the flanks, playing both left and right but looking unconvincing on either side, with numerous suggestions from fans and pundits alike that he needs to be moved centrally.

The World Cup winner has previously been described as the best ‘number 10’ in the world, and below is a look at how Arsene Wenger could shake things up tactically in order to guarantee his star player the role he craves.

With some bizarre and interesting ideas, including Jack Wilshere playing as a wing-back in a 3-5-2, see the following pages for three new formations for Arsenal to try out…

Arsenal transfers

1) 4-3-1-2

A little narrow, but with Ozil given plenty to aim at from ‘the hole’, as he is given creative freedom to roam behind an exciting-looking front two of Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck, who could also both enjoy playing upfront but not as the lone centre-forward as they have both done so far this season.

2) 4-2-3-1

Not a big change from how Arsenal play at the moment, but with Jack Wilshere moved wide-left and Aaron Ramsey dropping further back alongside Mikel Arteta to allow Ozil to occupy the more advanced midfield role. Although this might get the best out of Ozil, it does seem risky to damage the games of both Wilshere and Ramsey by moving them around into roles they are less familiar with and effective at.

3) 3-5-2

A formation not dissimiliar from the much-criticised one used by Louis van Gaal at Manchester United this season, Arsenal could even try their luck with a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 formation this season. Three at the back has not exactly worked a treat at the top level of English football before and may be a bit too much of a change for the Gunners at this stage, especially as they don’t currently have the players who can fill these positions, with Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hardly ideal as wing-backs, having never played there before in their careers. Three centre-backs is also not adviseable, as that is the exact amount of players Arsene Wenger currently has for that position, with any injury leaving them in a potential crisis at the back.
