Five Defenders Manchester United Should Target After Leicester City Mauling

Louis van Gaal’s side have started the season poorly.

Although Manchester United spent nearly £150 million on new players during the summer, they didn’t sign adequate defensive reinforcements. That was shown against newly promoted Leicester City, who ripped Louis van Gaal’s side apart with pace and power, beating them 5-3 on Sunday.

For the Red Devils to really compete for the Premier League title they will have to sign a quality defender so here are the five best candidates.

Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund

Arguably one of the best defenders in the world at the moment, Hummels would bring power to United’s defence, something they lack badly at the moment with Leicester routinely bullying them off the ball. The German would also be able to lead Louis van Gaal’s inexperienced defenders and tell them what positions they need to be. Hummels is a must buy for van Gaal if he become available.

Nevan Subotic – Borussia Dortmund

Hummels defensive partner at Dortmund and another fine defender. Again, he would not let himself be bullied like United’s defenders were against Leicester and would be able to command the respect of his team mates after several excellent years at the top with the German giants.

Miranda – Atletico Madrid

While the likes of Costa and Koke got all the headlines for Atletico’s La Liga triumph last season, arguably Miranda was even more important. He would bring valuable experience to United’s defence and his cool, calm exterior would be welcome among the Red Devils younger defenders.

Ron Vlaar – Aston Villa

The Dutch star could be available for free at the end of the season but United should target him in January such is the need for quality defenders. Like Hummels and Subotic, he would add strength to the 20 time league champions and Premier League experience which would mean he could just slot straight into van Gaal’s line-up without much trouble.

John Stones – Everton

The Everton youngster has been hugely impressive for the Toffees in his short career so far. He has been so exceptional that he has already made his England debut. Stones is such a good prospect that United should attempt to sign him in January as he could solve their defensive problems for the foreseeable future. Arguably, Louis van Gaal needs to sign someone with more experience but the 20 year old has an old head on young shoulders and would add real quality to the Dutchman’s defence.
