Although Strootman is known to be a big favourite of United manager Louis van Gaal, who has already shown he is ready to spend big on top class players this summer.
Instead of breaking their transfer record for Strootman, who only joined Roma for £15m last summer, here are five other players the Red Devils should consider to solve their midfield problems.
5) William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon)
Available for between £25-30m, Sporting Lisbon’s midfield starlet William Carvalho is a highly rated prospect at the moment and has attracted strong interest from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid of late.
United should certainly consider him as he could provide all the qualities Strootman can bring to the middle of the park, as well as being two years younger.
4) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)
A player who could be available on a free transfer in less than a year’s time, Sami Khedira could make an excellent signing for Manchester United and an absolute bargain to boot.
Arsenal and Chelsea are also known to be keen on the experienced German international, but the Red Devils should try to bring him in as he is arguably a more well-rounded player than Strootman.
3) Fredy Guarin (Inter Milan)
A top midfielder in Serie A for some time now, Fredy Guarin has also come on to Manchester United’s radar in recent times, with rumours that Inter Milan could let him go for as little as £15m.
The Colombian international certainly looks a great bargain at that price, and has also attracted recent interest from Chelsea and Juventus.
2) Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)
A superb midfield player for Bayern Munich and Germany for many years now, Bastian Schweinsteiger has been linked with United before and should be a player Louis van Gaal considers again.
The experienced midfielder is the perfect all-round player and has won everything there is to win in the game.
1) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)
Another expensive option, but £40m for Juventus star Arturo Vidal arguably looks like better value in the transfer market than £60m for Strootman.
The Chilean international has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and he should surely be United’s first choice to sign in midfield this January.
