Can Anyone Compete With Chelsea & Manchester City? Ranking Five Sides Who Could Challenge for Premier League Title

It already looks like a two horse race for the Premier League title this year.

After more than a month of Premier League football, it seems like Chelsea and Manchester City will be the two sides attempting to win the Premier League title this season. All of their rivals look short in important areas and won’t come near the Blues or City unless they improve rapidly.

Here is our ranking of the five other sides looking to put pressure on Chelsea and Manchester City and compete for the Premier League title.

5. Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs were always seen as rank outsiders in the Premier League title race and that has been confirmed by their form so far this season. Manuel Pochettino’s side have been inconsistent, winning brilliantly against QPR then putting in a poor performance against Liverpool. Tottenham’s fans would have hoped that last season’s wave of new additions would have gelled enough to threaten the top four but it doesn’t look like that has happened.

4. Everton

Like Tottenham, the Toffees have been inconsistent so far this season and currently sit in the bottom half of the table. Despite a poor start to the season, Everton would be expected to climb back towards the top four, especially with quality players like Romelu Lukaku in their side. However, they do appear to be unlikely to threaten Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League due to the small size of their squad and the problems that may arise if Lukuku gets injured for any length of time.

3. Liverpool

Last season, Liverpool were irresistible. However, during the summer they lost Luis Suarez, the player who scored the goals that got them so close to the Premier League title last season. Without him, the Reds aren’t as threatening. Even though Brendan Rodgers spent big during the summer, he doesn’t appear to have improved his squad, with big money buys like Adam Lallana failing to convince. Raheem Sterling will be the key to Liverpool’s season but if he gets injured, the Reds may struggle to get a Champions League place.

2. Manchester United

The Red Devils have certainly improved in attack this season with expensive additions like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao bringing the pace back to United’s team. However, Louis van Gaal’s side is woefully lacking in defence as the performance against newly promoted Leicester City proved. In the final 20 minutes of United 5-3 defeat, the Foxes looked like they could score at will, not a good sign for a team that should be competing for the title. While United undoubtedly have the attacking threat to compete with Chelsea and City, they will need to improve a lot defensively if they are to break into the Premier League’s top two.

1. Arsenal

Arsenal are the most likely team to compete with Chelsea and Manchester City but they to have a lot of work to do before they can consider themselves title challengers. Although the Gunners have looked strong against lower quality opposition, they have been shown up against better teams like in the Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund. They also have a small squad that is already stretched due to injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Olivier Giroud. Arsene Wenger will need to do some business in January if his side are to truly compete with Chelsea and Manchester City.
