They were pushed all the way by their Championship opponents, who held their own for the vast majority of the evening – cancelling out Kurt Zouma’s opener through Matt Mills’ goal.

A quiet night for the returning Chelsea veteran, who couldn’t quite reach the header from Mills.
RB) Cesar Azpilicueta – 7
Excellent performance from the Spaniard, who showed how useful he is when played in the correct position. Could be a contender for a starting spot come the weekend.
LB) Filipe Luis – 7
Another assured performance from the Brazilian, who deserves to be a mainstay in this team.
CB) Kurt Zouma – 7
Took his first Chelsea goal well, slamming the ball high into the net after a goalmouth scramble.
CB) Gary Cahill – 5
At fault for his former club’s goal, and continues to endure something of a difficult season.
CM) John Obi Mikel – 6
A comfortable night for the holding midfielder, who had little to do until the closing stages.
CM) Nathan Ake – 6
A solid shift from the youngster, who continues to impress when he gets the chance.
AM) Oscar – 7
Showed his class with an extremely well-taken goal, and looked at ease in the Chelsea midfield.
RW) Andre Schurrle – 8
The games stand out player as he did everything but score. Created chance after chance, but couldn’t find the net.
LW) Mohamed Salah – 6
Shot wide with one decent effort, but was otherwise quiet. Withdrawn with ten minutes remaining.
ST) Loic Remy – 6
Helped set up the first goal for Zouma, and came close to scoring himself, as he was denied by one excellent save.
Manager: Jose Mourinho – 7
Cut a frustrated figure as Chelsea struggled to put Bolton away, but will secured the win regardless.
Subs:
1) Didier Drogba – 5 – Led the line for the final 20 minutes.
2) Eden Hazard – 5 – Replaced Salah with ten minutes remaining.
3) Nemanja Matic – 5 – Came on in stoppage time.
