Here’s how the Blues rated:

13. Thibaut Courtois – 6

Never seriously tested by a Villa side that looked stunted in West London and dealt with some long range efforts from Fabian Delph easily.

2. Branislav Ivanovic – 7

Is becoming a brilliant attacking full-back after playing a fine ball through to Willian in the buildup to his side’s opener.

24. Gary Cahill – 6

Played well against his old club although was troubled by the pace of Gabriel Agbonlahor and earned a yellow card for bringing down the forward.

26. John Terry – 6

It was a physical afternoon for the captain, but in the end it was Terry’s side that came away with a clean-sheet and a positive result.

28. Cesar Azpilicueta – 7

Filipe Luis is going to spend a little longer on the bench based on this performance from Azpilicueta, who also setup the third of the game.

4. Cesc Fabregas – 7

Dictated play in the middle and although his shooting was wayward the Spain international continues to look like a world-class addition.

21. Nemanja Matic – 7

The Serbian and Fabregas have formed a brilliant central midfield pairing with Matic’s defensive displays allowing the 27-year-old to break forward.

22. Willian – 8

Another busy display from the Brazil international who provided Oscar with an assist for the opener and then scored the third himself.

8. Oscar (Mikel, 71′) – 7

This was a game that will have boosted the attacking midfielder’s confidence after a slow start to the season and the 23-year-old took his goal well.

10. Eden Hazard (Schurrle, 68′) – 7

Quiet in the first half but the Belgian settled into things after the break and was sharp to setup Costa for the second and then almost netted himself.

19. Diego Costa (Remy, 81′) – 9

What a signing this striker is proving to be, who showed off his physical presence against Villa and was on hand to score his eighth league goal of the campaign.

Substitutions:

14, Andre Schurrle – 5

Came on for Hazard but did little to impress.

12. John Obi Mikel – 5

Came on for Oscar to add more defensive grit and was solid enough.

18. Loic Remy – 6

Replaced Costa late on and looked sharp when leading the line.
