The Red Devils invested huge amounts of money in bringing in marquee signings such as Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this summer, and more exciting deals look set to follow when the transfer window re-opens.

Louis van Gaal is still on the lookout for players who could strengthen his squad in several key areas, while more departures are also expected to help fund these moves, with suggestions that big names could leave in a bid to raise around £91m in funds.

Three players seem to be the main focus for United, with defence and midfield still seen as the key areas in need of improvement:

3) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Valued at around £60m, AS Roma playmaker Kevin Strootman could be another superb addition to United’s midfield, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Anderson surely set to be shown the door at Old Trafford. The Dutch international may be expensive, but he could be a huge signing for van Gaal, who knows him well from their time with the Netherlands national team.

2) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

Possibly available for around £20m, Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus is on the agenda for United as Juan Mata looks the most likely to be on his way out of the club this winter. Juventus and Real Madrid are tracking the Spanish playmaker and could snap him up for around £24m, with Reus an ideal replacement and probably an upgrade on the former Chelsea man on current form.

1) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A truly world class centre-back, United could be set to spend around £30m on another Borussia Dortmund star in Mats Hummels. The German international has been a rock for club and country in recent years, and was strongly linked with the Red Devils over the summer. With United’s defence looking poor so far this season, Hummels might be the most important signing the club could make this January.
