Both Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta have been used in the holding role so far this season but have struggled to shield the Gunners defence, especially against top quality opposition.

Wenger has suggested that Abou Diaby maybe used in the holding midfield role but Parlour thinks the Frenchman needs to sign a defensive midfielder for the Gunners to compete for silverware.

“I would have said it’s something that’s desperately needed,” said Parlour.

“If you look at Arteta, he’s having a lot more injuries now.

“Once you’re over 32 it takes longer to recover.

“That position could be the difference. The problem is: Who is available?

“I think the club will buy players. If the right players are there, they will spend money.

“In the last four or five years they couldn’t buy the players they wanted but the finances are there.”

Arsenal have been linked with several top quality defensive midfielders recently, with Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho both thought to be interested in a move to the Emirates.
