Seven Reasons Liverpool Should Still Be Optimistic About This Season

Liverpool’s season hasn’t exactly been going to plan so far. But here are seven reasons why the fans should ignore everyone else and stay positive…

Many Liverpool fans are already set to give up on this season after a below-par start to 2014/15. But should they really be feeling so down about it all?

After last season’s heroics and coming so close to the title, a lot was expected from Liverpool this campaign, despite fans knowing they had lost arguably the best striker in the world in Luis Suarez.

It’s not all doom and gloom however, so here, with some help from the Mirror, are seven reasons why Liverpool fans should ignore the critics and look at the positives:

7) Lazar Markovic – So much more to come

Liverpool’s summer signing Lazar Markovic hasn’t had the best start to the Premier League, but like his fellow new boys he is bound to take a while to adjust to his new club.

One positive that can be taken from his performances so far is his work-rate. The Serbian showed an extraordinary willingness to track back against Everton, something you don’t often see from wingers as creative and tricky as he is.

6) It’s early days

It needs to be remembered that we are only six games into the season, and right now a win can catapult you up the league, while a loss can see you plummet.

Liverpool are currently only three points off fourth place, so although their position in the table looks bleak, the Premier League could look very, very different in six games’ time.

5) Goal difference

Despite having lost three games already this season, Liverpool’s goal difference is not that bad at all. At just -1 they are in better shape than sixth placed Aston Villa on -3, and on a par with surprise early package Leicester City, also on -1.

One game could see them positive again, and once they find their goalscoring boots it shouldn’t be a problem.

4) Favourable fixtures

With home games against West Bromwich Albion and Hull City as well as two away games against struggling Newcastle and QPR on the horizon, Liverpool could easily pick up 12 points from their next four games.

Chelsea then follow but after the league leaders it’s another good run for the Merseyside club.

3) Daniel Sturridge – Super Striker

He may have been in the shadow of Luis Suarez last season, but the striker still managed to net 24 goals in all competitions.

He has missed a number of matches due to a thigh injury sustained while on international duty with England earlier in the month, but he’s close to a return and could even be ready for the midweek Champions League clash.

2) Raheem Sterling

Sterling has started off this season in the fine form that he showed during parts of the previous campaign.

When he is crowded out and not given the space to play he is understandably far less effective. When Sturridge returns and players like Lazar Markovic, Mario Balotelli, and Adam Lallana start to shine we should see a further improved Sterling.

1) Summer signing influx

With Brendan Rodgers splashing the cash this season on a number of high profile players, it is understandable that the new recruits would take some time to gel.

With injuries meaning the new boys have had to be thrown into the mix straight away in many cases, it’s understandable that Liverpool aren’t at their best.

When the new players do finally bed in however, the Merseyside club could be back to firing on all cylinders.
