Manchester United spent big on a host of new signings this summer, but should Louis van Gaal now consider some high-profile returns in his next moves in the transfer market?

The Red Devils have continued to be linked with more ‘Galactico’-style signings under the Dutchman’s regime of big spending, and January could be an ideal time for the club to invest in bringing back three superb players who have shone elsewhere since leaving the club.

3) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

A player being strongly linked with a sensational move back to Manchester United at the moment, Cristiano Ronaldo should top van Gaal’s list of world class targets. The Portuguese international has hinted that he would like to return to Old Trafford at some point in his career after finding great success at the club in his first spell, and there’s no doubt he would improve this current squad and lift them out of their recent slump.

2) Paul Pogba (Juventus)

A player who has improved immensely since leaving United on a free transfer to Juventus back in 2012, Paul Pogba is now regarded as one of the best young players in the world, and would make an immense addition to the club’s midfield, with van Gaal still keen to improve in that area by targeting the likes of Arturo Vidal and Kevin Strootman, though the young Frenchman would arguably be the better long-term option.

1) Gerard Pique (Barcelona)

A superb centre-back, Gerard Pique never quite managed to make an impression on the first-team during his time at United as a youngster. The Spaniard has since shone since moving to Barcelona, though there have been suggestions recently that he could be set for a move away from the Nou Camp, in which case United should surely pounce as they still need improvements at the back after failing to land the likes of Mats Hummels, Miranda and Mehdi Benatia in the summer.
