Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 29, has his heart set on a return to Manchester United but any move is likely to be two years away, according to Sky Sports.

That’s the view of Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, who believes Real Madrid will not consider selling their star player for another two years.

Manchester United are exploring the option of playing lucrative midweek friendlies to fill the gap created by their lack of European football, according to the Daily Mail.

The record 20-time English title winners have forecast a 10 per cent drop in revenue in 2014-15 after they failed to qualify for the Champions League under David Moyes.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has backed assistant Ryan Giggs to succeed him as manager, the Telegraph reports.

Van Gaal gave a six-minute speech at a charity tribute dinner to Giggs at Old Trafford last Thursday which was attended by fans and club luminaries, where he backed the club legend to one day succeed him in the hot seat.

The Old Trafford club’s striker Robin van Persie has backed Van Gaal to turn around the club’s fortunes after a slow start to the season, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Old Trafford’s Dutch striker began to be indoctrinated in LVG’s managerial career philosophy two years ago when the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach became Holland’s national boss and at the same time van Persie joined United.

Manchester United legend Paul McGrath says Wayne Rooney’s status as a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford could be in jeopardy after he was sent off against West Ham on Saturday, talkSPORT reports.

Louis van Gaal indicated earlier this season that he views his captain as the only untouchable outfield player in his star-studded squad, but McGrath believes he has put himself under threat.
