Rooney will miss Manchester United’s next three games.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul McGrath fears Wayne Rooney could lose his permanent starting place in Louis van Gaal’s first team following his red card against West Ham, Talksport reports.

Earlier in the season, van Gaal stated that the England captain was the only untouchable member of his star studded United squad.

However, following his straight red card against the Hammers on Saturday, McGrath thinks the Dutchman may change his mind if the Red Devils perform well in their next three games without Rooney.

”They have got so much talent up front that Wayne is probably not going to be missed as much as people think he is,” said the Red Devils legend, speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

”Van Gaal is going to have to change the whole front system around and it might work better. You never know.

”I would have Wayne Rooney in there every time but he has given himself a problem by getting out [of the team] so simply. He has given Van Gaal a problem because he can say, ‘do we really need Wayne sprinting round the pitch, kicking people and maybe being petulant?’ And we are going to find out whether he does.”

United recorded only their second victory of the season against West Ham despite Rooney’s sending off. They currently sit 7th in the Premier League table with eight points from six games.
