Danny Welbeck scored a hat-trick and Alexis Sanchez added a fourth as Arsenal led 4-0 within an hour. Their euphoria was only slightly dampened by Wojicech Szczesny’s needless red card, which also saw their opponents claim a late consolation.
Read the full Arsenal ratings below:
GK) Wojicech Szczesny – 4
No excuses for getting yourself sent-off when your team is 4-0 up, needless from the Gunners keeper.
RB) Calum Chambers – 7
Composed on the ball, looks mature beyond his years – a stellar signing.
LB) Kieran Gibbs – 6
Solid performance – continues to impress and looks among the best left backs in England at the moment.
CB) Per Mertesacker – 7
Real the game well and was a calm, assured presence at the heart of Arsenal’s defence.
CB) Laurent Koscielny – 6
A surprise starter tonight considering his injury issues, and was pleasingly up to his usual standard.
DM) Mathieu Flamini – 5
Worked hard in front of the back four, but looked out of place in Arsenal’s otherwise fluent side. Booked.
CM) Santi Cazorla – 8
Yet another excellent performance from the underrated Spaniard, who bossed midfield throughout.
CM) Mesut Ozil – 7
Linked well with those around him and is progressively finding his feet again in the Arsenal team.
RW) Alexis Sanchez – 8
Great vision from Sanchez to set up Welbeck early on, before scoring the fourth himself. Sacrificed after Szczesny’s red card.
LW) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 7
Combined well with the Arsenal forward line and looked comfortable with his return out wide.
ST) Danny Welbeck – 10
Sensational performance from the centre forward, who scored three times with some confident finishing.
Manager: Arsene Wenger – 9
Masterminded a great European night for Arsenal on his 18th anniversary as Gunners boss.
Subs:
1) David Ospina – 6 – Made several decent stops after picking the penalty out of the net.
2) Tomas Rosicky – 5 – Replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain late on.
3) Jack Wilshere – 5 – A late run-out as he returned from a minor injury.
