According to Goal.com, Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United will make a shock £10m bid for Germany midfielder Sami Khedira in January.

The website reports that Van Gaal has turned his attention to the Real Madrid player after being told that AS Roma player Kevin Strootman, his number one target, will not be allowed to move in the next window.

Despite their enormous recent outlay and their desperate need for a defender, Van Gaal will apparently bid £10m for Khedira in January to trump Chelsea and Arsenal, who want to sign the player on a free when his contract expires in the summer.

The Real Madrid midfielder is currently recovering from a thigh injury and will not be fit until after the international break, although given the depth Madrid have in central midfield, he might struggle to break back into the team.

Khedira would certainly provide a vast improvement on the likes of Darren Fletcher, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and loaned out England man Tom Cleverley and provide an injection of real quality in the centre of the park.
