7) Mario Balotelli (Liverpool – £16m, 1 goal)

Coming up last is Mario Balotelli, who has been a massive disappointment since moving to Liverpool to fill the void left by the departing Luis Suarez. For a £16m fee, a return of just one goal so far is simply not good enough from the Italian international, who has looked lazy and ineffective in most of his games for the Reds so far.

6) Romelu Lukaku (Everton – £28m, 2 goals)

An exciting signing by Everton, but one that is yet to truly deliver on his hefty £28m price tag that brought him to Goodison Park on a permanent transfer from Chelsea. The young Belgian is undoubtedly talented, but maybe we are starting to see why he wasn’t quite up to scratch in terms of winning a place in Jose Mourinho’s side.

5) Abel Hernandez (Hull City – £10m, 2 goals)

A good value signing, Abel Hernandez already has two goals in his first three games for Hull City, joining the club from Palermo in a smart £10m deal by the Tigers.

4) Radamel Falcao (Manchester United – £6m loan fee, 0 goals)

Although he is yet to get off the mark for Manchester United, Radamel Falcao should prove a big hit at Old Trafford once he gets going, and will surely prove a bargain at just £6m, even if that is quite a bit to pay for only having a player on loan, with his fee surely set to rise enormously if he makes a permanent move to the club.

3) Leonardo Ulloa (Leicester City – £8m, 5 goals)

A superb piece of business by Leicester City, Leonard Ulloa has made a great start to life in the Premier League after his £8m move to the club from Brighton. With five goals to his name already, the Argentine could prove one of the finds of the season, though it remains to be seen if he can maintain this bright start at the King Power Stadium.

2) Danny Welbeck (Arsenal – £16m, 4 goals)

A signing that divided opinion at the time, but one that is looking like a great piece of business now. Arsenal’s £16m new-boy Danny Welbeck already has four goals for the club, including a superb Champions League hat-trick against Galatasaray this week, looking instantly more effective as a player when used in his best position, one he rarely got to play at his previous club Manchester United.

1) Diego Costa (Chelsea – £32m, 8 goals)

Although he is the most expensive player in this list, you get what you pay for in football and Diego Costa is undoubtedly a bargain even at £32m. When players like Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale move for astronomical fees then Costa certainly looks cheap given his immense goalscoring record in the last year or so, and he has adapted seamlessly to life at Chelsea and in the Premier League, with eight goals in just six games.
