Manchester United Boss Louis Van Gaal To Sign Entire New Back Four, Including Barcelona Pair: Report

Van Gaal to revamp entire United backline?

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be preparing to completely revamp his back four in the coming months, with recent reports linking a host of big-name defenders in each position to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils brought in the likes of Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw during the summer transfer window, but arguably still look short at the back, particularly in the centre after some unconvincing displays so far this season.

After recently conceding five goals away to Leicester City, it is no surprise to see van Gaal looking at tightening up in his back four, and it looks as though as many as four new players could be brought in to aid this crisis at the back, including a double raid on La Liga giants Barcelona.

It remains to be seen if United will be successful in bringing in all four of these players, but here is a look at a potential new backline for the club, with new additions at right-back, left-back and two at centre-back:

4) Dani Alves (Barcelona)

According to the Daily Star, United are one of the clubs looking at Barcelona right-back Dani Alves after he announced his desire to move to the Premier League next summer. The experienced Brazilian could be an upgrade on Rafael in that position, though Liverpool are also interested in the 31-year-old as he confirms this will be his final season at the Nou Camp after a great career with the Catalan giants.

3) Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid)

The Daily Express reports that United could also make a raid on La Liga with a move for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao, who could become surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu this season as the club ponder signing a new player of their own in that position in the January transfer window. Having signed Angel Di Maria from Real in the summer, Louis van Gaal hopes that the Argentine winger can persuade his old team-mate to follow him to Old Trafford.

2) Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund)

The Daily Express has also linked United with a move for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic. The Serbian international has been a solid performer for Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent times, and could make a superb addition for the Red Devils as they seek to bring in upgrades on the likes of Jonny Evans and Phil Jones.

1) Gerard Pique (Barcelona)

Another signing at centre-back could see former United defender Gerard Pique re-join the club from Barcelona, according to the Daily Star. The 27-year-old is looking like falling out of favour with new manager Luis Enrique this season, and his slight dip in form could mean he would benefit from a new challenge elsewhere, with Louis van Gaal interested in the experienced Spaniard to help improve his side’s fortunes at the back.
