The Red Devils spent heavily on several big names in the recent transfer window, in a bid to improve their fortunes after a highly disappointing season that saw them finish in 7th place and with no silverware last year.

United now seem to be focusing their attention on the Bernabeu again, with three big names from the Spanish giants on van Gaal’s radar for January and for next summer.

It remains to be seen if the club can afford all three of these players, but see below for this highly ambitious transfer list based on recent reports and speculation:

1) Gareth Bale

According to a recent story from the Daily Star, United could be lining up a stunning move for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, who is seen as a decent alternative to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Welshman was a Premier League star in his time with Tottenham Hotspur and could make an excellent addition at Old Trafford.

2) Sami Khedira

The Daily Express reports that United are als preparing to pay around £10m to sign Real Madrid defensive midfielder Sami Khedira this January. The club are in need of new midfielders after missing out on several top targets in that position during the summer, and this experienced World Cup winner could be a great bargain as he nears the end of his contract at the Bernabeu.

3) Fabio Coentrao

The Daily Express also links out-of-favour Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao with a move to United, with van Gaal hoping that the presence of Di Maria at Old Trafford can lure the Portuguese international to the club to compete with Luke Shaw for a place in the side.
