Louis van Gaal plotting major clearout worth £63.5m.

Having targeted his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, United are now focusing their attention on the Welshman, who looks set to break the world transfer record for a second time following his £85m move to the Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur last year.

Five big names could make way to help United go some way to raising the cash for Bale, with these players chosen by van Gaal:

5) Juan Mata

Worth around £24m, Juan Mata is a target for the likes of Juventus and Atletico Madrid going into January, with van Gaal seemingly ready to let the Spanish playmaker go as he prepares to make room in the attacking midfield department.

4) Marouane Fellaini

An unwanted midfielder who has not impressed since joining from Everton last season, Marouane Fellaini is attracting interest from Napoli and could leave for around £15m.

3) Wilfried Zaha

Currently on loan at Crystal Palace, Wilfried Zaha can also leave Manchester United this January if clubs are willing to pay £7m to snap him up permanently.

2) Ashley Young

Despite a decent start under van Gaal, Ashley Young continues to be a disappointment for United and will be offloaded for around £9.5m this January if clubs come calling.

1) Chris Smalling

Finally, United also hope to raise another £8m from the sale of unconvincing defender Chris Smalling, who has attracted surprise interest from Arsenal in recent times.
