Real Madrid and Barcelona are the two biggest clubs in the world, and in every transfer window the eyes of the footballing world turn to them to see which superstar they will sign next. Even players at top clubs will be tempted by the glory and prestige associated with playing for them. But the two are competing at the highest level, and any signing they make must be good enough to play in a team with the best players in the world. Here are some of the players which the two clubs will be battling over in the next few windows, each of them good enough to start from the moment they arrive.

16) Adnan Januzaj – Manchester United

One of the most coveted talents in world football, Januzaj has been temporarily pushed out of United’s starting 11 by the wealth of signings they’ve made. With his stock at the lowest it will ever be, this is the perfect time to swoop for the technical attacker.

15) Marco Reus – Borussia Dortmund

The German international has rejected a new contract at Dortmund and is available for £25m. Both Barcelona and Madrid have been linked with him, and Real allegedly already have a deal in place for January.

14 )Adrien Rabiot – Paris Saint Germain

The talented French midfielder’s contract expires in the summer and PSG are keen to get rid of him in January while they can still get a fee for him. He is likely to have offers from dozens of clubs, but will be waiting for a bid from Barca or Madrid.

13) Robin Van Persie – Manchester United

Another player who has been pushed down the pecking order by the star signings in Manchester, Van Persie has been linked with Barcelona many times in the past, but may fit the Galactico ethos of Madrid even better, especially if Benzema leaves.

12) Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund

Both clubs need defenders, and Hummels is just about the best there is. Only 25 and technically superb, Dortmund’s poor form this year might be the incentive the German international needs to leave.

11) Zakaria Bakkali – PSV

The Belgian wonderkid is only 18 but has already shown the physical, mental and technical abilities necessary for a player who wants to play at one of the world’s biggest clubs. Real and Barca would do well to buy him in January, before his price starts to rise.

10) Arturo Vidal – Juventus

The three-lunged midfield dynamo has been linked away from Juventus repeatedly over the last few windows. If he can prove his fitness after a series of injuries he would be a huge buy for either.

9) Edinson Cavani – Paris Saint Germain

The Uruguayan striker is tired of being played out wide at PSG and will reportedly be looking for a move in January. He has proven quality and would slot in nicely up front for either side.

8) Juan Mata – Manchester United

Louis Van Gaal considers him too small and weak to play behind two strikers, but Mata could be perfectly suited to the technical Spanish league. His passing ability and first touch would be ideal at Barcelona, and he would be available for less than his true value.

7) Tin Jedvaj – Bayer Leverkusen

The Croatian right-back is stunningly talented, and is already filling the space left by Dani Carvajal when he returned to Real Madrid. The move to Real or Barca could be the one that really declares Tin as the next Philip Lahm.

6) Hugo Lloris – Tottenham Hotspur

Lloris is, frankly, too good for Tottenham. Real Madrid will soon be looking for a Casillas replacement, with the veteran stopper about to enter his 34th year. Lloris is the perfect replacement.

5) Julian Draxler – Schalke 04

The young playmaker is ready to move on from Schalke, and both Barcelona and Madrid will be keen to buy him before Bayern Munich can seal the deal.

4) Paul Pogba – Juventus

The brilliant 21-year-old would be the perfect midfield engine for either team, complementing the assortment of technical wizards they each have. Would be expensive, but worth it.

3) Timo Werner – Stuttgart

Werner burst onto the scene last year at Stuttgart and would be the perfect understudy to Suarez or Benzema. An all round forward, Werner was the youngest player to ever play for Stuttgart.

2) Raheem Sterling – Liverpool

The breakthrough talent of last year’s Premier League season, Sterling is the brightest English talent in the world. His interplay with Suarez was magical, and he could be tempted to Madrid to link up with the Uruguayan again. If either of the big clubs want him, they should go for him in January – before he signs a new deal.

1) Eden Hazard – Chelsea

The Chelsea forward would cost well over £100m and the West London club will not want to sell, but player power always wins in the modern game, and how could the Belgian superstar resist the lure of Barcelona… or Madrid?
