20) Burnley – Steven Fletcher – £3m – Premier League new boys’ record signing is still striker Steven Fletcher, who was signed for £3m from Burnley in the club’s last spell in the top flight – although that was matched by the arrival of George Boyd from Hull this summer.

19) Crystal Palace – Dwight Gayle – £4.5m – Striker Dwight Gayle is the record but of relatively frugal Crystal Palace, with the young forward joining for £4.5m from League One side Peterborough United around 12 months ago.

18) Leicester City – Leonardo Ulloa – £8m – One of a number of clubs to have broken their transfer record this summer were Leicester City, who spent £8m on striker Leo Ulloa from Brighton.

=15) Stoke City – Peter Crouch – £10m – One of three clubs whose record is £10m, Stoke City splashed out an eight figure fee to secure Peter Crouch from Tottenham Hotspur.

=15) Hull City – Abel Hernandez – £10m – Uruguayan international forward Abel Hernandez became Hull’s record signing this summer, with Steve Bruce paying Palermo £10m for his services.

=15) West Bromwich Albion – Brown Ideye – £10m – West Brom also broke their record on a striker this summer, with Brown Ideye arriving from Dynamo Kiev for £10m.

14) Swansea City – Wilfried Bony – £12m – One of few buys on this list that looks like a bargain, Swansea paid Vitesse Arnhem £12m for Wilfried Bony in the 2013 summer window.

13) Queens Park Rangers – Christopher Samba – £12.5m – One of the strangest buys in recent times, QPR paid Anzhi £12.5m for Chris Samba to try and stave off relegation, only to sell him back once Championship football was confirmed.

12) Sunderland – Steven Fletcher – £14m – One of two players to appear on this list twice, Steven Fletcher signed for Sunderland from Wolves for a fee rising to £14m.

=10) West Ham United – Andy Carroll – £15m – West Ham’s decision to pay Liverpool £15m for the permanently injured Andy Carroll isn’t looking like the best move.

=10) Southampton – Dani Osvaldo – £15m – Southampton’s record buy, £15m striker Dani Osvaldo from AS Roma, never worked out – he quickly returned to Serie A with Juventus and Inter Milan.

9) Newcastle United – Michael Owen – £16m – Back in their days of actually spending money, Newcastle paid Real Madrid £16m to sign England striker Michael Owen.

8) Aston Villa – Darren Bent – £18m – Villa’s £18m record buy of Darren Bent from Sunderland was another deal that has just never quite worked out.

7) Everton – Romelu Lukaku – £28m – There is a huge jump of £10m to the seventh highest record buy, which was this summer’s Everton purchase of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

6) Tottenham Hotspur – Erik Lamela – £30m – Tottenham paid Serie A side AS Roma £30m for winger Erik Lamela last summer, but the Argentinian is yet to find his best form at White Hart Lane.

5) Liverpool – Andy Carroll – £35m – The second player who appears twice in this list, Liverpool’s £35m buy of Andy Carroll from Newcastle still raises eyebrows now.

4) Manchester City – Sergio Aguero – £38m – Manchester City paid Atletico Madrid a huge £38m to sign forward Sergio Aguero, but they are likely to see that as a fine investment for a world class performer.

3) Arsenal – Mesut Ozil – £42.5m – Arsenal broke their transfer record at the end of the 2013 summer window, paying £42.5m to Real Madrid for playmaker Mesut Ozil.

2) Chelsea – Fernando Torres – £50m – Chelsea rejected paying Liverpool £50m to sign striker Fernando Torres from almost the second that the deal went through.

1) Manchester United – Angel di Maria – £59.7m – The final team in this list to have broken their record this summer, Manchester United broke the British transfer record to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid.
