The defender has fallen down the defensive pecking order at the Etihad and is behind Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis in Manuel Pellegrini’s plans, meaning he is unlikely to get much first team football this season.

The Italian club enquired about the availability of the Serbian after securing a point in the Champions League tie against the Sky Blues on Tuesday and were so encouraged by the talks with City officials that they will make a formal approach for the player in January.

City are willing to sell Nastasic if they receive a bid of £12 million, the same amount they paid Fiorentina for the centre-back two years ago.

Roma won’t be the only team interested in signing the defender with Arsenal also thought to have an interest in the 21-year-old.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger needs to reinforce his defence in January and like Roma boss Rudi Garcia, he expressed interest in Nastasic’s availability during the summer transfer window.

However, it remains to be seen whether City will be willing to do business with one of their Premier League title rivals.
