The Red Devils were noted for their heavy spending over the summer as they broke their club transfer record to sign Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid, with the Argentine winger joining other big names such as Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind in moving to Old Trafford this season.

United’s spending has not led to massively improved results on the pitch so far, however, and Louis van Gaal looks set to continue his aggressive approach in the transfer market with five more big-name and big-money transfers in January.

It remains to be seen how the club will afford these ambitious deals, but below are the five huge signings that could be making their way to Old Trafford when the transfer wind0w re-opens in the winter:

1) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

In a deal expected to cost a world-record £90m, Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has emerged as a surprise target for Manchester United as they ponder an alternative to Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

2) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

A further £40m could be spent on the signing of superb AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, who has long been linked as a top target for United and Louis van Gaal.

3) Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina)

In a reported £70m double swoop, another £30m could also go on the signing of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado, who was linked with the Red Devils several times during the summer.

4) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Having failed to land one of their top midfield targets Arturo Vidal in the summer, United will now launch a staggering £52m bid for the world class Chilean international.

5) Radamel Falcao (AS Monaco)

Finally, United are also ready to splash out £43m to make Radamel Falcao’s loan move to the club permanent this January, in a bid to avoid missing out on his signature if other top clubs circle.
