Liverpool Eye Signing Of Espanyol Goalkeeper As Victor Valdes Alternative

Reds interested in the signing of Kiko Casilla.

Liverpool are eyeing the signing of highly rated Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla from struggling La Liga outfit Espanyol, report fichajes, as Brendan Rodgers ensures that he has a contingency plan in case their prospective deal for former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer falls through.

Casilla is rated as one of the finest goalkeepers in La Liga despite playing for an Espanyol side struggling for form and who could well be in the relegation battle this season and, if his performances continue, it is almost certain that the 28 year-old will move on to a bigger club at some point.

The former Real Madrid trainee has now been on the books of Espanyol for seven years, but it took Casilla plenty of time to establish himself first choice at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, with loan spells at Cadiz and Cartagena helping him to establish himself as the best man for the job at Espanyol.

The Reds are believed to be in the hunt for a new ‘keeper to challenge underperforming Belgian first choice Simon Mignolet, who has underwhelmed so far this season, with Australian stopper Brad Jones not seen as a good enough back-up – leading to the pursuit of the likes of Valdes and Casilla in an attempt to ensure that any injury to Mignolet would not be a complete disaster.
