The Premier League’s Five Worst Penalty Conceders: Arsenal & Liverpool Defenders Very Clumsy In The Box

Which five players have given away the most penalties in the Premier League?

There are five players on this list that you may want to think twice about if they are ever linked with your club. Though they seem like competent and seasoned Premier League performers they have one undeniable asterisk next to their names – and that is that they are the biggest serial offenders in their own box. Yes, these five have conceded the most penalties conceded for their team’s in the last four years, but who is the biggest offender of them all?

5. Ryan Shawcross – Stoke City

Penalties conceded: 5

The Stoke stopper has often been mooted to become an England international, but his record in his own area is perhaps one of the key factors for his continued exclusion. As capable as he may be, his robust nature often hinders him and the team, rather than aiding it.

4. Martin Skrtel – Liverpool

Penalties conceded: 5

Skrtel is a crucial part of Liverpool’s back line, and bar a small wobble last season has proved himself to be an effective member of the squad. However, he does have moments of panic and can commit needless fouls, as reflected here, but makes up for it somewhat with an equally impressive goalscoring record in the right box.

3. Sebastien Bassong – Norwich City

Penalties conceded: 5

It says a lot that Bassong still makes it so high on this list despite not even being in the division anymore. He is not a terrible defender by any stretch, but his inclusion to this exclusive club belies that he is somewhat of a liability when it comes to staying on his feet where it really counts.

2. Wojciech Szczesny – Arsenal

Penalties conceded: 6

The Pole has recovered from his enforced hiatus of two seasons ago to become the club’s undisputed first choice goalkeeper. However, he has still proved that there is a lot to his game to be desired as his record for giving away spot kicks earns him second place in this list.

1. Laurent Kosielny – Arsenal

Penalties conceded: 7

The Frenchman is perhaps the more able of the Gunners back line, but between him and his goalkeeper the club have given away 13 penalties over the last four years. Whether it be for handball or an ill-timed challenge, Koscelny has cost the Gunners their fair share of points during that time.
