Karim Benzema, Real Madrid

The sale of Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona has hit the Reds harder than perhaps anyone expected, with replacement Mario Balotelli failing to fill the void as yet.

That is why Rodgers is looking at other striker alternatives and Benzema is said to be a £38m target, although whether he would leave the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is another matter.

Iker Casillas, Real Madrid

Staying in the Spanish capital this goalkeeper has found things tough at his boyhood club for some time now, with both current head coach Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho before him doubting the 33-year-old’s ability.

Meanwhile Simon Mignolet is becoming more of a liability on Merseyside and although Victor Valdes has also been linked this fellow Spaniard could act as great competition to the current No.1.

Gonzalo Higuain, Napoli

Back to attack now and if Benzema does prove to be too difficult to prise away there is another forward who is reported to be unhappy at his current club and therefore open to a move away.

Higuain is proven goalscorer and a poacher who could add some real experience to Rodgers’ side, but having only been with Napoli since 2013 would also have a price-tag to reflect that.

Ezequiel Lavezzi, Paris Saint-Germain

One of the main reasons many thought the Merseysiders would struggle this term was having to play Champions League football with a relatively small squad.

That is why despite already having Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Raheem Sterling on the flanks the introduction of this PSG ace would also be welcome.

Marco Reus, Borussia Dortmund

Finally it is arguably the biggest name of the lot, but also someone who could prove to be one of the cheapest due to a release clause written into the German’s contract.

As of next summer Reus will be available for £19.8m and therefore Dortmund could be convinced to sell him for a little more than that in January.
