Seven Premier League Players Who Get Paid Far Too Much: Do Arsenal And Man United Strugglers Earn More Than They’re Worth?

Seven Premier League players that earn more than they’re worth.

The Premier League is perhaps the one division that consistently pays players far more than what they really should be earning. With Manchester City topping the table for the best payed sports team in the world ahead of the New York Yankees, we decided to take a look at the Premier League wage table and pick out seven names that collect a salary that they seldom deserve.

Scott Sinclair – Manchester City

Earning: £50,000-per-week

Sinclair was once a promising talent emerging from Chelsea’s youth academy where he was being tipped for a very bright future. However, he went on a never ending Bob Dylan-style never ending tour of clubs across England before ending up at Swansea. There, he began to establish himself and show what he can do once settled, but he quickly gave that up for a move to City where injuries and a loss of form have prevented him from reaching his true potential. He now collects a massive weekly wage from the comfort of the physio room.

Anderson – Manchester United

Earning: £60,000-per-week

The Brazilian doesn’t get paid as much as some, but for what he does earn it is a lot regardless. At one point he may have been worth the outlay, but his performances over the past two-years have been woeful, hinting at a loss of form that seemed to have come from nowhere overnight. He still clearly believes he is worth the money, though, as he struggled to find a club willing to take him onto their wage bill at that price. He could be in for a rude awakening next summer when his contract expires.

Darren Bent – Aston Villa

Earning: £65,000-per-week

The was a point where Bent was most definitely worth the money he’s earning. He was an England international and firing Aston Villa to safety two seasons running. However, since Christian Benteke turned up in the West Midlands, the 30-year-old has struggled to adapt his game and has fallen behind in the club’s pecking order. Villa would dearly love to get him off the wage bill, but at that price buyers are in short supply. He may need to realign his expectations at the end of the season.

Joey Barton – Queens Park Rangers

Earning: £80,000-per-week

Barton may provide good entertainment on social media platforms, but on the pitch his abilities are more than limited. How he earned a move to Marseille two seasons ago is anybody’s guess, and if that wasn’t difficult enough to figure out, then his weekly wages in the capital are even tougher. Particularly as he spends most of his time on the treatment table these days.

Emmanuel Adebayor – Tottenham Hotspur

Earning: £111,000-per-week

Adebayor may be back in contention at White Heart Lane this season, but that doesn’t mean he’s back in amongst the goals. Spurs could have a real weapon on their hands for the same money, as the Togolese hit man continues to look an increasingly impotent goal scorer. It’ll hurt Spurs fans to hear, but he’s now a shadow of the player that he was at Arsenal and is virtually stealing a living at their cross-town neighbours.

Ashley Young – Manchester United

Earning: £118,000-per-week

Earlier in his career Young looked to be one of the most exciting English players of his generation and every time he got the ball he couldn’t fail to get bums off seats. However, it now appears that he can’t get his own bum off the bench and when he was given a chance to at the start of the season by new boss Louis Van Gaal he failed to take the opportunity. Now a vastly expensive waste of talent and likely to move on in the new year.

Mesut Ozil – Arsenal

Earning: £180,000-per-week

Is he worth it? The jury is still out. Many will argue that he’s being played out of position, but if he was worth it he’d surely be able to adapt. He showed glimpses of being the world class talent that he can be last season, but so far he has failed to push on and has come in for some serious criticism – none of which has been unwarranted.
