Reports in today’s press were surrounding Karim Benzema’s potential £40m move from Real Madrid to Liverpool, and the chances of Cristiano Ronaldo’s £80m return to Manchester United, also from Madrid.

Of course they aren’t the only big-money deals that could be happening. Here are our top ten:

10) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton to Tottenham)

Tottenham chased the Southampton man throughout the summer, without success, and could return with a renewed bid of around £20m in the January window.

9) William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon to Arsenal)

Arsenal are desperate for a new holding midfielder, but missed out on the Portuguese star over the summer. A £25m offer should bring the player to London in January.

8) Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli to Liverpool)

Several reports have linked Liverpool with a move for the Argentine striker, who is currently without Champions League football after Napoli missed out on qualification. He would cost the Reds around £30m.

7) Kevin Strootman (Roma to Manchester United)

Roma have so far rebuffed rumours of the Dutchman’s impending move to Old Trafford, but this deal looks something of inevitability, even if it means the Italian side holding out for over £30m.

6) Arturo Vidal (Juventus to Manchester United)

Another long term United target who has been in one of the longest on again, off again transfer sagas of all time. A bid in the region of £35m would surely be too good to turn down.

5) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City)

Numerous Premier League clubs have shown an interest in the German winger, who missed the summer’s World Cup through injury. A clause in his current contract means he’s available for just £20m next summer, but if the likes of Manchester City want him sooner, they will need to pay almost double that.

4) Karim Benzema (Real Madrid to Liverpool)

If Liverpool are still in the Champions League come January, they will likely splash the cash as they did this summer. The signing of the Frenchman would be a real signal intent, and would certainly take some of the pressure off the miss-firing Mario Balotelli.

3) Edinson Cavani (PSG to Arsenal)

Like Reus, a number of Premier League clubs have tracked Edinson Cavani, who is reportedly tired of being Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s understudy in Paris. Arsenal have plenty of cash and could do with another top class striker to challenge the rapidly improving Danny Welbeck. The deal could cost upwards of £45m.

2) Ross Barkley (Everton to Manchester City)

Everton are believed to have quoted a jaw-dropping £50m fee for any team interested in taking Ross Barkley away from Goodison Park. The 20-year-old is certainly talented, and is now back in training after an injury ruled him out of the start of the season. If any team would stump up the cash, it would be the Premier League champions.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid to Manchester United)

Surely this couldn’t happen… could it? The world player of the year has certainly spoken of his desire to return to Old Trafford before the end of his career, and United have stated their intent to continue spending plenty of cash on their new look team. But is £80m too much for a player who will be 30 in February?
