10. Napoli – Net spend: £182.4 million

Although the Italians’ presence on this list maybe a bit of a surprise, they did recently spend £34.5 million on striker Gonzalo Higuain.

They are now also one of the biggest teams in Serie A moving ahead of old power houses like AC Milan and Inter Milan.

9.  Zenit St Petersburg – Net spend: £217.8 million

The Russian club have spent big in order to try and compete with Europe’s top clubs and have recently splashed the cash on expensive players like Hulk and Axel Witsel.

8. Bayern Munich – Net spend: £250.6 million

The Bundesliga champions are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have the power to spend millions on talented players like Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara, who both arrived in the summer of 2013.

7. Liverpool – Net spend: £258 million

The Reds spend around £100 million this summer buying players like Mario Balotelli and Adam Lallana.

Their big transfers don’t always go to plan though with the £35 million they spent on Andy Carroll being one of the biggest wastes of money ever.

6. Barcelona – Net spend: £336.4 million

The Catalan giants spent £75 million on Luis Suarez this year and bought Neymar for a huge fee last summer, so they were always going to feature on the top 10 net spenders.

5. Manchester United – Net spend: £344.8 million

The Red Devils wouldn’t have got so high on this list without their £133.6 net spend this summer in which they broke the British record transfer by signing Angel Di Maria for £59.7 million.

They also bought in the likes of Radamel Falcao and Ander Herrera.

4. Paris Saint-Germain – Net spend: £378.1 million

To become a French footballing powerhouse, PSG have had to spend big over the past decade.

The Parisians have spent large sums on players like David Luiz and Edinson Cavani and because of that, they are one of Europe’s best sides.

3. Chelsea – Net spend: £396.6 million

The Blues spend big during the early years of Roman Abramovich’s reign at Stamford Bridge.

They have been a lot more circumspect recently but because of that early spending, they still make the top three of the biggest net spenders list.

2. Real Madrid – Net spend: £515 million

Real Madrid have spent huge amounts over the past 10 years, signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale for world record fees.

Last year, they won their 10th Champions League, so all that spending must have been worth it.

1. Manchester City – Net spend: £619 million

Like PSG, the Sky Blues have spent millions on becoming a European footballing powerhouse.

In the last three years, they have won two Premier League titles thanks largely to expensive signings such as Sergio Aguero and David Silva.
