Liverpool News Roundup: Chelsea’s £48m Move For Sterling, New Goalkeeper On Verge Of Signing And Defender Praises Slovakia’s Surprise Win

Friday’s biggest stories for the Reds.

Chelsea linked with shock £48m move for Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling

There are concerns over Sterling’s future at Anfield as a new contract for the 19-year-old continues to come to no fruition.

It’s believed that the Reds are preparing a five-year deal with weekly wages close to £100,000 for the youngster, but with doubts over whether this will be signed some European giants are closing in.

According to the Daily Express, along with the Blues both Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are keen on signing the England international.

Negotiations with free agent Victor Valdes have begun

The former FC Barcelona goalkeeper is on the verge of signing for the Merseyside outfit after beginning talks over a free transfer, according to the Daily Star.

Valdes has been out of contract since leaving the Nou Camp at the end of last season and Brendan Rodgers views the 32-year-old as the ideal competition for current No.1 Simon Mignolet.

The Belgium international has become increasingly erratic since his 2013 switch from Sunderland and Rodgers wants an alternative to the 26-year-old.

Glen Johnson wants to be back in the England setup

The Three Lions maintained their 100% record in Euro 2016 qualification on Thursday as they beat San Marino 5-0 at Wembley Stadium.

However, for right-back Johnson it was somewhat painful to watch as the 30-year-old is currently injured, but may have lost his place in the national team anyway due to bad form.

“I’m training with the Academy lads and some players who I’ve never met before. It’s good and it’s different. Of course, I’d rather be away on international duty,” the defender was quoted by the Daily Star.

Martin Skrtel lauds Slovakia’s win over Spain

One of the big shocks of the international break so far was the Slovakian’s Euro 2016 qualifying triumph over the reigning European champions on Thursday.

Merseysiders defender Skrtel was involved in the win in which the unfavoured hosts won 2-1 and gave them a great chance of making the competition in France.

“Of course we knew they had the quality but we showed that with character and commitment you can get all three points,” the 29-year-old was quoted by Inside Futbol.

Fabio Borini says having four forwards is good

The Italian opted to stay with Rodgers’ side this summer despite strong interest from both QPR and the Black Cats, but has plenty of competition for a place in the starting XI.

Daniel Sturridge and new signings Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli are also available for the manager, but Borini says that is a good thing.

“We have four completely different players so there is a good choice of players in the squad, because we can all do different things,” the 23-year-old told the club’s website.
