It has been a period of transition for the club under the Dutchman and here are the five most important players to their cause, according to CaughtOffside.

Daley Blind

Van Gaal recruited a whole host of attacking talent this summer and whilst that is exciting, stability is also required and with Michael Carrick injured and concerns over the capability of Darren Fletcher, the introduction of Blind in defensive midfield is crucial to the team’s success.

David de Gea

Upon first signing from Atletico Madrid back in 2010 this goalkeeper was erratic and inconsistent, but the 23-year-old has since developed into a top class stopper and with the shaky Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos as backup it’s vital the Spaniard stays fit.

Angel di Maria

Another new signing now and someone who became the most expensive player in British history upon completing his £59.7m transfer from Real Madrid, but to date the Argentina international appears to be worth it as he has sometimes dragged the team to positive results.

Phil Jones

The biggest issue that many have identified for the Red Devils is in defence, where the loss of Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic over the summer is proving tough to deal with and with Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling out of form, Marcos Rojo yet to settle in and a host of youngsters who are unproven, Jones has been the one shining light at the back.

Wayne Rooney

This could be a controversial pick for some as many think Rooney is past his best, but his statistics tell a different story and with Robin van Persie now 31-years-old and Radamel Falcao’s future at the club still uncertain, some consistency is needed in attack and can be provided by the captain.
