Constructing An England XI Without Liverpool Or Arsenal Stars – It’s Very, Very Average!

Liverpool and Arsenal stars currently dominate the England squad…

In the England squad right now for this weekend’s fixture versus Estonia, Arsenal have supplied Danny Welbeck, Calum Chambers, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – and Theo Walcott will be reinstalled when fit.

Their Premier League rivals Liverpool have seen Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Rickie Lambert called up by England, and Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson would have been too if it were not for injury – as would Steven Gerrard if it wasn’t for his international retirement!

Here’s an England XI Roy Hodgson could select if he wasn’t allowed to call upon stars from England’s current feeder clubs…

GK) Joe Hart

Defensively, much would remain the same – with Joe Hart starting between the sticks.

DR) Nathaniel Clyne

Clyne’s benefitted from Liverpool man Glen Johnson’s injury, although Arsenal’s Calum Chambers is also keen to start in this spot.

DC) Gary Cahill

One of the first names on England’s team-sheet.

DC) Phil Jagielka

Jagielka or John Stones (currently injured) are both capable of lining up alongside Cahill.

DL) Leighton Baines

Baines would have a seemingly free-run at this spot without Reds or Gunners, with Jon Flanagan and Kieran Gibbs representing Liverpool and Arsenal. Luke Shaw may eventually prove he’s worth £27m, however.

DMC) Jonjo Shelvey

With Jack Wilshere an Arsenal player, the Swansea man would be selected in holding midfield.

MC) Fabian Delph

Delph would take Jordan Henderson’s box-to-box midfield role.

MC) Ross Barkley

Barkley is currently injured, but is expected to eventually become a key part of the England set-up.

AMR) Andros Townsend

With Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Lallana and Sterling representing Arsenal and Liverpool, the Spurs man could get the nod on the right.

AML) James Milner

England’s utility man has over 50 caps, and could do a (rather uninspiring) job on the left!

FC) Wayne Rooney

With Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert and Danny Welbeck playing for Arsenal and Liverpool, Rooney would have very little competition for a striking spot!
