How England Should Lineup Against Estonia After 5-0 San Marino Victory Including Nathaniel Clyne Replacing Arsenal Star

The Three Lions maintained their 100% record, but changes are still needed.

England maintained their 100% record in Euro 2016 qualification on Thursday as they triumphed 5-0 over footballing minnows San Marino at Wembley Stadium.

However, a glut of goals was expected against a nation who’s entire population couldn’t even fill Wembley and changes are needed before the English take on Estonia on Sunday.

Here is how CaughtOffside thinks Roy Hodgson should lineup his side.

GK – Joe Hart

Some very witty fans on Twitter nominated the goalkeeper as Man of the Match against San Marino, but there is no doubting that the Manchester City stopper is the No.1 choice for the nation.

RB – Nathaniel Clyne

Finally got called up to the national team and then lost out on a place to Arsenal’s Calum Chambers – who was only promoted from the Under-21s because of an injury to John Stones – and the 19-year-old looked shaky, so Clyne should get his chance.

CB – Gary Cahill

Continues to be the most assured and experienced presence at the back, although who will partner the Chelsea star in the long-term is another matter.

CB – Phil Jagielka

Scored against San Marino and is still the best choice at centre-back despite the erratic behaviour of the Everton captain – although Chambers and Stones are close on his tail.

LB – Leighton Baines

Kieran Gibbs was given a chance on Thursday and whilst the 24-year-old did little wrong, Baines is a much better outlet at left-back if only for his set piece and crossing capabilities.

CDM – Jack Wilshere

Is being asked by Hodgson to operate in a role he is unfamiliar with, but the 22-year-old is working hard to make a success of it and against the Estonians it should be a great time for the Gunners man to gain experience.

CM – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

James Milner was deployed against San Marino, but the workmanlike attitude of the Citizens midfielder wasn’t needed and Oxlade-Chamberlain looked like a much more exciting prospect when he came on, providing the assist for the third goal.

CM – Jordan Henderson

Is trying to take up the mantle left by the recently retired Steven Gerrard and although nowhere near as good a passer as his Liverpool skipper, Henderson does have many other similar attributes to the 34-year-old.

CAM – Raheem Sterling

This new diamond formation appears to be working for Hodgson and Sterling is increasingly becoming more of a creative No.10 than the winger we were used to seeing and the country’s most exciting player needs to be in a pivotal role.

ST – Wayne Rooney

Scored one and forced an own goal for another on Thursday, although still many think more is needed from the 28-year-old and if Daniel Sturridge was fit his place in the XI could well be threatened.

ST – Danny Welbeck

Having got a brace last time out against Switzerland, this forward netted again this week and looks to be growing in form and confidence with every game that passes.
