Iceland host World Cup semi-finalists the Netherlands this evening, and will come into the game full of confidence – riding high at the top of their Euro 2016 qualification group.
After consecutive 3-0 victories over Turkey and Latvia, Iceland have six points out of a possible six, and are of course yet to concede a goal. In comparison, the Dutch lost their opening game 2-1 to the Czech Republic, and were then were given a surprisingly stern test by Kazakhstan, eventually winning 3-1.
The home side have never qualified for a major tournament, but only narrowly missed out on a place in the World Cup last summer, after a 2-0 play-off defeat by Croatia. They initially finished second in their group – ahead of Slovenia and Norway, but behind Switzerland.
They have seemingly improved again since then, with players such as Cardiff City’s Aron Gunnarsson and Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson key to their chances. Top goalscorer Kolbeinn Sigthorsson of Ajax, who has hit the net 16 times in 25 appearances, is also worth watching.
The Dutch have struggled under Louis van Gaal’s replacement, Guus Hiddink, thus far – but will remain favourites for this game thanks to their vastly experienced squad, which still includes the likes of Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.
